Cosmology textbook starts with this obvious assumption. But precision experiments are on the way to test it. WMAP data show some anisotropic effect in low multipoles already. Next generation experiment (Planck) will confirm it with high precision. These are some way related to the initial dynamics of inflation, multiverse models, etc., etc.
