What were the initial conditions of the Universe?

Submitted by Ryan Terri, Stony Brook graduate student.

The Lagrangian formulation of the standard model does not take into account any set of initial conditions. Most higher-level physics models also break down at t < 10-43 s, where quantum mechanics and gravity are combined. Any conditions before this time will affect the couplings of matter as well as the evolution of the universe.
