Why does physics work? More precisely, why is nature so symmetrical?

Submitted by Navin Sivanandam, SLAC graduate student.

As we approach new horizons in our understanding of symmetry breaking and its causes, it seems that we should start to ask the deeper question of where the symmetry itself originates from. It's far from certain that this line of inquiry is answerable or even meaningful; it is, however, puzzling. (Plus, it's not a question about dark energy!)
